Sarah Palin and Religion
She carried a known Down’s Syndrome baby to full term because she believes in the sanctity of human life.
Her 17-year old daughter, Bristol, is unmarried and pregnant. Palin supports her having the baby.
Her critics say she is far right. Palin says it boils down to her Christian faith.
Where Does Palin’s Faith Come From?
According to family and friends, it came from her mother.
Palin was baptized as an infant in the Roman Catholic faith, but her mother’s search for what she described as a “more meaningful path to faith” led to her a different denomination — the Wasilla Assembly of God.
Palin attended church Sunday mornings and nights and Wednesday nights. She went to church summer camps and vacation Bible school. Church became the focal point of her social life. She was baptized, along with her parents and siblings, in Beaver Lake.
In high school, she was the leader of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Wasilla High School.
During her junior year of high school when the basketball team was narrowly defeated at the state championship in Juneau and the coaches did not see the team at breakfast in the hotel restaurant, they figured they were still in their rooms asleep. Instead of licking their wounds, the whole team — led by Palin — had taken it upon themselves to attend church that morning.
When in Juneau, the state capitol of Alaska, Palin attends the Juneau Christian Center.
She lists her home church as the Wasilla Bible Church — a non-denominational church not affiliated with the Assembly of God organization.
Faith and Politics
She often has expressed that the proposed natural gas pipeline she has fought for is part of “God’s will.”
In June 2008, she described U.S. involvement in the war in Iraq as “a task that is from God.”
