The mostly placid waters of Lake Lucille in Wasilla, Alaska, aren’t exactly the place where one might expect to spot a 25-foot Defender class patrol boat owned by the United States Coast Guard. On any normal day, you’d see a variety of canoes and skiffs plying the lake as folks practice their canoing strokes or try to catch rainbow trout. But that wasn’t the case on September 11th through the 13th as Secret Service agents were faced with the challenge of providing aquatic protection for Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, during her two-day visit home. Stefani Marnon was year-round, Executive Chef at the Governor’s Mansion in Juneau for more than eight years. Alaska is one of 40 states that has employed a full-time, professional, gourmet chef at the Governor’s mansion. Chef Marnon, a celebrated seafood chef and a graduate of the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont, was released from personal, day-to-day, food preparation responsibilities for the Palin family as a cost-saving measure in 2007, but retains her executive chef duties at the mansion during the busy Legislative season which starts in the winter.
Support for the McCain-Palin campaign, at least the Palin end of it, apparently is coming from a solidly conservative source that Republican image-makers may have mistakenly overlooked in their efforts to make Palin appeal to those outside the party faithful. Read more » »

Soap opera writers couldn’t have asked for a better plot than what is found in the Troopergate scandal. One might accurately label it “As Alaska Turns” instead. It took place in the Capitol town of Juneau, in Anchorage - which is the state’s largest city - and in Wasilla, the hometown of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. The plot centers around the first family of Alaska and the alleged actions of its matriarch — Governor Sarah Palin - and her sister, her sister’s patrolman ex-husband, a nasty custody battle, and the firing of the popular state public safety commissioner appointed by Governor Palin. I could not disagree more with Jack McMullen’s thesis that McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin is a brilliant choice. Palin has extreme pro-life views, she has no familarity with issues at the federal level and she has no foreign policy background or experience. McCain’s selection of Palin makes me question his judgment, particularly when he had two excellent alternatives. Read more » »
